Receiving Days: Monday, October 25, 2009 through Friday, October 29, 2010, from 10 AM to 5 PM at the following locations:

LAHAINA: Lahaina Arts Society Old Jail Gallery; 648 Wharf Street

KAHULUI: Lanai Seating Gallery; 312 B Alamaha Street

KIHEI: Xinia Productions; 330 Ohukai Road, #108.

Jurying Day: Saturday, October 30.

Notification Day: Tuesday, November 2.

Opening Reception: November 5th from, 6 to 8 PM.

Exhibition Runs: November 5 - December 3, 2010

Eligibility: Photographers must be 18 years of age or older and a current Maui County resident. All submissions must be the original work of the applicant, completed without the aid of an instructor. No pieces larger than 16X20 (or 320 sq.-in.) will be allowed. Every piece must minimally be mounted in a frame or on stretcher bars. All pieces must be “ready to hang” with a wire hanger. Any pieces that are not ready-to-hang with a wire hanger will be disqualified. Entry fee is $10 per piece, and each photographer may submit up to 4 pieces total for the following categories: COLOR, MONOCHROME or DIGITALLY ENHANCED. Each category will be divided into two divisions, AMATEUR and PROFESSIONAL. The Professional division is defined as photographers that derive 50% or more of their income from photography. Sales/Commissions: All sales of art work will be divided 55% to the artist and 45% to the gallery.
LAS reserves the right to use images of submitted pieces for inclusion in the exhibition and for the purpose of publicity.

All entry fees and proceeds benefit the Lahaina Arts Association’s Children’s Art Outreach Program.

Waikamoi Hike this Saturday (Oct. 23rd)

Aloha everyone,

This is a reminder that Mike Neal will be leading a photo hike this Saturday, Oct. 23rd through the Waikamoi Preserve. Please read the attached document as it provides important information about the hike. [Please see email for document]

We will be meeting at the Pukalani Ace Hardware and leaving promptly at 8:30AM rain or shine to carpool up to Hosmer Grove. If you are running late or are unable to make it at the last minute please give me a call at [please see email for phone number.].

The hike space is limited so respond to confirm your spot.

Some recommendations from Mike Neal at the last meeting were:
-Bring a poncho (they can be purchased at Ace Hardware at the meeting spot)
-Bring a light lunch, will be shooting through (bring out trash with you)
-Can be done in tennis shoes, but hiking boots would be better.
-Please wash off an excess mud/seeds on shoes/clothes.
-Bring your biggest lens, distance to birds should be around 5-8 ft.
-Flash helps.
-Don't bring large tripods, you must be able to hike with your gear.

We started with a recap of the Maui Photo Festival, then went into planning for the Photo Salon.

We are going to need as many people as possible to help for the following days:

Saturday, September 25, 3-9 at Hale Mahaolu Elima Community Room (11 Mahaolu St., Kahului) for Sorting of prints
Sunday, September 26, 3-9 at Hale Mahaolu Elima Community Room (11 Mahaolu St., Kahului) for Judging

Wednesday, September 29, 5-11ish at the Maui County Fair Photo Salon for Hanging of prints
-Please RSVP for Wednesday's Hanging of show by 9/26 if possible because dinner will be provided from Baile. If you are don't RSVP STILL COME!!!! just looking for a rough estimate on food, but we need as much help as possible, so come either way!

Sunday, October 3, No later than 7:30 (or security will not let you in) at the Fair Photo Salon for Taking Down of prints

So please e-mail me the dates you will be coming to help out and I'll get a list going.

Also discussed at the meeting, Possible print donation for next year if people don't pick up their prints as a fundraiser for us (with their permission); and an in house Photo Yard Sale among members was also proposed for a later meeting.

Mike Neal is looking for a few people to go on a 6am Hosmer Grove hike in the near future, to be discussed next meeting.

Great camera gear resource

I've been in the market for upgrading my camera gear for a while now but the cost of new is a bit daunting. So I began searching for used photo gear and recommendations for good resources a couple of weeks ago. Besides the expected recommendations for Craigslist and EBAy, both of which I find a bit dicey as to reliability, someone mentioned that the Fred Miranda website had one of their forums dedicated just to buying and selling of camera gear and they police it to prevent ripoff artists and scammers from overrunning the place.

I immediately checked it out and I was blown away. The Buy and Sell forum is loaded with great deals from professional and amateur photographers selling quality used gear at reasonable prices. They rate their participants as to reliability (just like EBay) but it really seems to be focused more on the dedicated photography community rather than the general public.

So if you are in the market for used gear or have good quality gear to sell it's the place to go. I found that items can get snapped up within an hour of posting so it is worth checking regularly. The generally accepted payment method is PayPal and sellers often will absorb the PayPal fee and pay shipping. Of course since we're here in Hawaii the shipping can be considerably higher than mainland rates and some sellers will specify continental US only, but even then I discovered that sellers are generally willing to split the shipping cost to Hawaii on most items, they just specify mainland only to make sure they don't get hit with stuck international shipping rates.

Annual Banquet

It's that time of year again, the Maui Camera Club annual banquet. This year it will again be held at Cafe O'Lei at the Dunes at Maui Lani. The date is Saturday January 30th with doors open at 5pm, dinner at 6pm.

Our featured speaker will be Robert Gilman who will share some of the wealth of his photography knowledge and experience with us.

Cost this year is $40 per person if we have more than 35 attendees, for less than that it will be $45 per person so let's get friends and family and anyone interested in a fascinating talk and a great meal to join us this year.

A trip to the Kaheawa Wind Farm

Last Thursday the Camera Club was given the opportunity to take a guided trip up to the Kaheawa Wind Farm above the Pali for a photo shoot. The folks at First Wind, especially our guides Noe Kalepi and Wren Wescott, were wonderful hosts and we had fabulous conditions for shooting with lots of blue sky and great vistas.

We were fortunate a couple of months ago to have Dr. Gary Greenberg give a fabulous presentation to the monthly meeting (very well attended) about his new book "A Grain of Sand". He showed us a slideshow of his work and talked about the process he uses to create the incredible images in his book and on his website.

He also pointed us to the software he uses to capture the incredible depth of field for his shots. It is called Helicon Focus and allows a careful photographer to take many shots of a subject, focusing on different points on the subject, and then combines those shots to create an image that contains all the sharpest focus points in the group of images (known as a "stack"). This is an incredibly useful, if tricky, way to make some pretty stunning macro photographs with a depth of field one could never get from a single 35mm image.

Photoshop Express is a web application that not only lets you edit your images but works with Flickr and Facebook but lets you store your images also.

Maui County Fair update and entry form

The 2007 Maui County Fair is just around the corner and the Camera Club will again be coordinating the always popular Photo Salon and contest. This year we've added a new category for Maui Youth 18 and under.

If you are interested in entering your photos in the Salon please download the Entry Form (it's a Microsoft Word document, just click on the link and download the file to your hard drive) and follow the directions. All entries must be at Dr. Ansai's Optometrists office, 74 Lono Ave. Kahului HI no later than 5pm Friday September 21st, 2007. All images must have been taken after Oct. 1, 2006 to be eligible.

Judging will be occur on Sunday, September 23rd at 6pm (not open to the public) at our regular meeting place. Any Camera Club members who wish to help out may come by to lend a hand. Last year we had nearly 400 entries to organize and put before the judges which made for a very long night. All help from members is appreciated.

We will be hanging the Salon on the Wednesday evening, September 26th, beginning at 6pm at the War Memorial Auditorium. Again, any help that Club members can provide will be greatly appreciated. We hang all entries at the Fair and the more help we can get from our membership the better our chances of getting done at a reasonable hour. It's a lot of fun and we get to appreciate all the great photography from the people of Maui.

Mayor's Office display a success

We've completed the installation of our photos on the 9th floor of the Mayor's office and the display is being well received. Thanks to all in the Mayor's office and the Mayor herself for their patience while we spent the day cluttering up their hallway with our ladder, stool and photos as we laid out the exhibit and then hung the photos.

We've also posted framed versions of the two images below. The one with the camera was done by Jose Morales of Xinia Productions and a Camera Club member, who produced the ad using his own old camera and then creating the artwork around it. A beautiful job by Jose and greatly appreciated and it will be in the Art Maui brochure as an ad for the duration of the Art Maui show in March.

The other image was produced by Tom Elliot.

Give us your best photos for the Mayor's office display!

ATTENTION ALL CAMERA CLUB MEMBERS!

The annual display of photos at the Mayor's office on the 9th floor of the County Office Building will happen between February 1st and May 1st this year. We need photos! If we have enough we also have an opportunity to hang photos on the 8th floor as well (Council Chambers). Please gather up your good photos and make arrangements to either deliver them yourself to the County Office Building on February 1st by 10am or arrange with someone to pick them up beforehand. We do not have space to store these ahead of time so you need to arrange with someone you know will also be displaying photos.

All photos must be in frames and ready for hanging with clips on the back where we can attach the hooks. Clips centered on the upper part of the frame work best.

Let's show off the best of the Maui Camera Club and have lots of good photos to show. Please include your name and a title for the picture on a card or list so we can make display tabs for them.

New Photoshop CS3 Beta available for download

Stephen, maybe but mine are at least in color...

For all interested Camera Club members! Adobe has a new version of Photoshop available for free download for all registered users. This is a beta version (i.e. not the complete finished program) but it is essentially ready for primetime and any registered users of CS2 can download and use this version until the final program is released sometime next year.

Just follow this link Photoshop CS3 and follow the instructions for downloading and then using your existing registration to obtain a valid registration number for CS3. I've been playing around with it some already today and find it quite interesting. For anyone who has played with Lightroom this has similar features incorporated into the Raw Image processor.

Oh, and here's some photos from the Christmas potluck. As you'll notice they are in the modern technique of color photography...[a little sarcasm there for Mr. Bartlett]
