How strong is your password?
The following guide was sent to me by my web host, Network Solutions;
Passwords are the primary way that Internet users secure their online accounts, whether they are banking, sharing information among friends or simply setting up an email account. As a result, the security of your online information is directly related to the strength of your password.
Sites with weak passwords are particularly at risk in cases of cyber attacks, as evidenced by an attack late last month that affected WordPress sites across the Internet. In that case, attackers were attempting to break into WordPress websites by continually trying to guess the username and password to access users’ admin panels. Because of the high profile of open source applications like WordPress and Joomla, those accounts can be particularly at risk.
Please take a moment and ensure that your account passwords, particularly your WordPress or Joomla account passwords, meet minimum requirements for security. Strong passwords generally meet the following requirements:
- 8-14 characters
- 1 upper case letter
- 1 lower case letter
- 1 number
- 1 special character such as ! @ # $ % ^ & *
Never use the same password on two or more of your accounts. It is also a good idea to change your password every 2 to 3 months.
