Our March camera club meeting will have, as its guest presenter, Gwen Arkin. Gwen teaches classes at the Hui No’eau Visual Arts Center in Makawao and is coming to spend some time with the Maui Camera Club to share her creative process with our members. You can read more about Gwen on her website, found here.
Fernando Lopez Arbarello had this to say about Gwen:
“I feel full admiration for Gwen Arkin, not only for her art and vision but most important for her spirit. Gwen seems to understand the true essence of image and prints making and glides and explore her creative space in complete freedom. What most of us would see as limitations or discomfort, like the use of film, chemistry, plastic lenses, light leaks or low megapixels … she experiments as doors into endless spaces of opportunity in which she dives into without fears or ties. Film, digital, scans, photogravures, or magical contact prints developed by direct sunlight, her art is full of magic … with the unique freshness and uncertainty of honest spontaneity.
I discovered Gwen two years ago, following a personal call to nose into the world of film photography and joining one of her classes she regularly offers at the Hui No’eau twice a year … “A Day In The Darkroom” … and it was so much fun that I joined again, this time with my wife several months later. While I will continue enjoying and mastering digital photography, film is the future for me. And I’m certainly looking at Gwen as one of my teachers.
I encourage all members to come and meet Gwen, and find out that there is a much brighter future for your photos than sharing a thumbnail in facebook to receive a few likes, or print on a boring canvas … again. Come have a glimpse of what freedom of expression and creation is about, and some of the endless possibilities that open up to us as soon as we dare to look away from megapixels … sensors … and lcd screens.
We hope to see you at the meeting…details and a link to our meeting space can be found below.
