Ray Mains

R.I.P. Ray Mains (Cap'n Ray to many of us)

Ray was a singular talent here on Maui, living a legendary life for nearly four decades as one of the island's premier pro photographers. Always happy to share his knowledge, Ray taught a generation of budding photographers through his classes at Maui Community College (now UHMC).

He led numerous (and often a little crazy) photo class adventures around the island, including epic two-day trips to Hana. He always told his students, “If you want to learn more about photography, join the Maui Camera Club.” That’s how a lot of us came to be members. He also invited a number of his photo students to help take pictures at the annual PGA golf tournament in Kapalua.

The last several years he lived with his daughter and her family in Texas, but would regularly call his old photo buddies here at random times for some ‘talk story’. He was one of a kind and will be missed.
